In the UK we pay an annual VED Vehicle Excise Duty – more commonly known as Car Tax or Road Tax.
Changes were announced in the budget autumn 2024 and will take effect April 2025 until March 2026.
The biggest changes will affect Electric Cars and commercial vehicles.
We used to benefit from £0 zero / free road tax which was an incentive to buy an EV, but this will no longer be the case – affecting both brand new and used EVs.
How much will my car cost to tax now? Well if it’s an Electric Car I can explain how I’ve managed to interpret the rules so far. As I write it actually wasn’t very clear exactly how some of the new rules are applied to either electric, alternative fuel, hybrids and petrol / diesel but I think I’ve managed to get it all about there!

So whilst EVs now have to pay, it’s still less than emissions vehicles. High emissions cars are given a very hefty (first year at least) tax bill of over £5000!
But it’s important to look beyond the publicity saying it’s £10 for EV… this is ONLY for the first year!
