Rivian Electric Pickup Aerodynamics

Seeing the Rivian up close for the first time, I noticed some interesting details of aerodynamics of the truck body.

Last weekend, I was at the MREA Energy Fair, participating in their Clean Energy Car Show. One of the coolest vehicles there was a Rivian electric pickup truck. (There were actually three different Rivians there that weekend!)

I noticed a few aerodynamic details of the body.
First, front air ducts that pass air from the front of the vehicle, PAST the sides of the front wheels, and then back to the sides of the body. I’ve seen this on several different electric vehicles now.

Likewise, there’s a very similar style vent in the horizontal wing at the back of the cab. This draws the air down towards the flat tonneau cover over the bed.

The truck also has flush door handles and windshield wipers that are BELOW the hood, so they are completely out of the airstream during regular driving.

Not shown in the video is also the fact that there’s adjustable ride height. While on the freeway, the truck lowers to reduce the total frontal area.

Let’s also not forget that it’s almost completely FLAT on the underside of the truck. Nice and smooth for good aerodynamics!
