This weekend sees the Formula One teams head to the Red Bull Ring near Spielberg in Austria which is pretty much the magnificent old Österreichring cut in half!
The Österreichring hosted the Grand Prix from 1970 to 1987 with Nigel Mansell winning the last race and setting a new fastest lap of 151.04mph.
Back in 1978 Tiff Needell was one of many hopeful young drivers who headed there to take part in the Formula 3 support race with sponsors Unipart bringing their film crew with them and adding a third car for Lauda – no, not Niki but his cousin Thomas – and we’ve recently unearthed a copy of that film!
The Austrian Grand Prix was one of many to have a Formula 3 support race and its prestige had gradually grown to match that of Monaco and Silverstone so, when Tiff headed out onto the track, he had high hopes of raising his profile …
