If a Formula 1 car drives fast enough, the downforce it generates is enough for it to overcome gravity entirely – yes, that is to say it could theoretically drive upside down. But no one has ever proved it with a real life demonstration. That is, until McMurtry came along. You see, this adorable little machine doesn’t need speed to generate downforce, instead it just uses a fan. Two of them, in fact, to pull a partial vacuum underneath the car. Since the pressure above the car is greater than below the car, it’s pressed towards the ground with tremendous force. And you really don’t need much of a vacuum to generate massive downforce. In this case it can produce roughly 2,000 kgs worth, far, far more than the vehicle weighs, without the need for wings or high speeds to do so. The result? Spin it upside down, and it can putter along just fine at breathtaking speeds.
