In this video I install emergency pull cords on the hidden manual release cables in the rear doors of my 2024 Tesla Model Y. I also explain why you might want to do this — but honestly, I think the whole ‘trapped in a crash’ risk is massively overblown.
The worry is that if the car loses power, you can’t open the doors from the inside. Front doors have an obvious manual lever, but the rear doors only have a hidden cable tucked away in the bottom of the door pocket. People assume the whole car dies in a crash, but that’s not how Teslas work. Even when the airbags deploy and the high voltage battery gets cut by the pyrotechnic fuse, the low voltage (12V or 16V) battery stays live — and that’s what powers the door releases.
The chances of the doors actually losing power in a survivable crash are pretty slim. And if the crash is bad enough to kill the 12 volt system, the passengers in the back probably aren’t walking away anyway! Still, these cords are cheap and take ten minutes to fit, so I did it anyway.
You can buy these pull cords from https://amzn.to/4mNnVSj or https://amzn.to/4tZAUCU

The vehicle in this video is a 2024 Tesla Model Y RWD (MCU3/Ryzen/HW3) with the 62.5kWh (60,5 kWh usable) LFP battery and at the time of filming this running on software version 2026.8.6.1.
This video was filmed in April 2026.
