Tesla automatically updates the maps in the cars quietly in the background over Wi-Fi, separately to the main over-the-air software updates. In this Short I show you exactly how it works.
Even on though my car is still currently using the older EU-2025.14 map, one particular junction that my car has avoided for over a year is now being routed correctly for the first time – proof that Tesla can improve navigation behaviour without a full map refresh. The new 2026 European map update is rolling out right now, so expect that soon – if your car is connected to WiFi.
The vehicle in this video is a 2024 Tesla Model Y RWD (MCU3/HW3) with the 62.5kWh (60,5 kWh usable) LFP battery and at the time of filming this running on software version 2026.14.6.
This video was filmed in June 2026.

If you’re buying a new Tesla, use https://ts.la/conor263910 or enter "conor263910" as a referral code for a discount off your purchase of any Tesla vehicle or product. With certain types of new car finance, your credit will appear later in your account, which you can then use to spend at Tesla. This is my daughter & husband’s referral code so the free Supercharging credits go to them as they’ve just got their first EV, a 2022 Tesla Model 3.
