UK energy prices - diesel vs electric - What's the range for your money?

After buying some diesel today (on 5th September 2022), I did some maths to compare how far the £28 of diesel gets you in a typical diesel car, vs spending £28 on electricity in an EV, when charging during the night at home. I will do more in depth videos on this subject over the coming months, but it just goes to show how EVs are still considerably cheaper to run for most people and you can’t believe the headlines in the UK media!

Here’s the explanation of the figures…
Diesel is currently £1.789 per litre near us. Assuming the average car has an economy of 40mpg, the diesel car can travel 141 miles for the £28.86 spend.
Charging at home on the Octopus Go tariff is currently 7.5p per kWh for new contracts (up from 5p previously). Assuming the electric car has an economy of 4mpkWh, the EV can travel 1,539 on £28.86 worth of night-time electricity.
Obviously I have to make assumptions on driving economies here. In fact, our Hyundai Ioniq EV (28kWh model) averages at least 5.5mpkWh and we still charge this at the old rate of 5p, as the Octopus Go tariff is fixed until May 2023, so for the £28 of electricity we actually get 3,175 miles in the EV! That’s the reality, even though many don’t like to hear this!
