You shouldn’t rest your hand on the gearshift if you drive a car with a manual transmission. We’ll take a look inside manual transmissions and see how the shifter, shift forks, gear collars, and gears work together to make the magic happen. Resting your hand on the shifter can cause problems. For example, take this quote from the Mitsubishi Evo Owner’s Manual: "Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest.
