The First Electric Toyota GR86 Launch the Electric Racing Car Market in The Summer of 2023 | New Auto&Vehicles EV
Different from custom cars with impressive power, the Scalar Performance brand has brought to SEMA the first electric Toyota GR86 race car approved to compete in NASA’s Super Touring Series.
The SCR1 is based on the sporty Toyota GR86 model, but Hypercraft swaps the 2.0-liter engine for an electric powertrain, combined with a race-focused chassis setup.
According to Brian Bourne, co-founder of Scalar Performance with Joe Fallaise, their goal is to provide “the purest driving experience that requires minimal maintenance and allows the team to focus on driver development control”.
On the outside, the new 2023 Toyota GR86 SCR1 looks like a true race car, but the model retains the original body of the Toyota GR86 with additional details designed specifically for the track. These details include a prominent splitter, tow straps, a large rear spoiler, and a new diffuser and exhaust system.
This electric Toyota GR86 is equipped with new 18-inch Enkei alloy wheels shod with Hoosier high-performance tires. Inside, the car is equipped with an eight-point anti-roll frame from VR3 Engineering, a Sparco racing seat with FIA-approved six-point seat belts by Safecraft Racing, and SFI racing safety net windows.
Hypercraft’s sole 800-Volt electric motor produces 328 hp and 468 Nm of torque, making the model more powerful than the traditional Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ duo. This model is capable of accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in about 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 265 km/h. Power is sent to the rear axle with the help of a Torsen limited-slip differential.
The model is equipped with a 65kWh battery pack, allowing more than 45 minutes of racing between charges. The model can complete a full charge in less than 20 minutes when connected to a DC Level 3 fast charger (150 kW), reducing charging time. For safety, the battery pack features a Lifeline fire extinguishing system with integrated Novec 1230 flame retardant liquid.
The brand says the SCR1 feels like a mid-mounted ICE-powered race car thanks to a similar weight distribution. The SCR1 weighs in at 1,379 kg, 103 kg heavier than the commercial Toyota GR86.
Öhlins’ custom suspension has been specially tuned for the SCR1 and the brakes feature 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. SCR1 will be showcased at SEMA 2022 in Las Vegas from November 1 to 4.
The brand has planned to launch the electric racing car market in the summer of 2023 with the Founder Edition version will be limited to 10 units. Each vehicle will have a serial number plate, plus owners will receive support from the technical team including online updates.
