Yep, behind this garage door, is a VW Mk2 Golf G60 Rallye covered in Swallow shite. Almost a barn find, but certainly a rare survivor.
While filming our recent Oval Beetle ‘Hedge Find’, we stopped for a coffee break. The owner of the property, Geraint, then casually mentioned that he had another VW in the garage ‘we might be interested in seeing’. Eyebrows were raised, and the record button was pressed as the garage door went up.
‘My interest in VWs led to owning a string of Beetles, buses, Type 3s and even 411s. My son got interested in them because of me, and this Golf is actually his. He emigrated well over 20 years ago, but refuses to let me sell it. I start it every few years and warm it up, then wash it. The swifts come every year and nest in the garage. I used to cover it up, but kept forgetting. Do you want me to run up the Golf? It will start, I am sure…’

Visually the Rallye wore inflated wheel arches and wide metal side skirts, similar to other rally greats of the ’80s (think Audi Quattro and Integrale Lancias). The headlights were oblong, and the three slat grille was different. It was a lot of difference for a car that didn’t really sell very easily and it was alleged to have cost over double that of a Golf GTI, which wasn’t exactly cheap.
5000 sold worldwide, but only about 100 coming to the UK officially, all are LHD. Basically, this was the Godfather of the R32 launched after the millennium.
