DRIVEN: Citroen Ami Buggy. You’re BONKERS but we love you | Electrifying

If you’re one of those people who look at the Citroen Ami and say, “Yeah, I like it but I’d prefer something more expensive and even less practical”, then we’ve got good news.

This is the Ami Buggy. As you can see, it’s probably one of the most bonkers cars ever made. Before we go any further, we’re going to quickly explain what the Ami is. The Ami is officially classified as a quadricycle, which is part way between a motorbike and a car. A quadricycle doesn’t need all the safety kit and whatnot that a car does, but on the downside, its power output and top speed are restricted.

The Buggy comes in one spec – Buggy, which makes choosing your perfect spec a lot easier. You don’t even need to choose the colour, because it only comes in khaki green.
Door bars hinge at the front or the back, depending on which side you’re sitting. Why? because it’s cheaper to make one part rather than a separate left and right-hand one. Clever. Doors (if you can call them that) are like the bars you get on a fairground ride.

It won’t surprise you to learn that are some very strange design touches on the Ami.
We’re not sure how much downforce the rally-style roof spoiler generates, and if you need some guidance as to where the wheels are, there are arrows on the wheel arches.

If you do plan to take your Buggy out in the rain, Citroen has you covered – quite literally – with zippable side panels. They’re not particularly glam and to be honest, you’d be better off with a mac and a pair of wellies.

Because the Ami is classified as a quadricycle rather than a car, it doesn’t have to be fitted with all the usual safety kit. So instead of an airbag, you get this, a zip-up bum back for your phone and keys. Whether that’s a good thing all comes down to your attitude to risk. Are you more concerned about surviving an accident than losing your door keys? If it’s the latter, this could be your perfect car.

Under the floor is a 5.4kWh battery. Which is tiny. You charge it via a normal socket or use the adaptor to access a wallbox. It takes around four hours to charge from empty to full. If you’re charging on cheap-rate electricity – it’ll cost you the princely sum of 49 pence to fully charge.

Okay, we’ve given you the good stats first, because the bad ones are a bit harder to digest. Citroen claims that the Ami will do up to 46 miles on a charge. Which is okay… if you only venture 23 miles from home every day.

At least you don’t worry about the heater draining your battery… because there isn’t one.
