Currently taxation is collected in three forms from UK drivers. Fuel duty on both petrol and diesel, plus 20% VAT on top of that too, plus vehicle excise duty on the vehicle.
EV drivers will pay vehicle excise duty (VED) from April 2025, but only pay 5% VAT on the electricity if charging at home, but 20% VAT if using public chargers. Either way that’s a massive drop in taxation when drivers switch to electric vehicles.
So in the future we need a new system of taxation to replace the lost fuel duty on petrol and diesel sales. This could be a pay per mile system. In the full video https://youtu.be/DAnuEzeiOzI, I explore that.

If you’re thinking about buying a new Tesla, use https://ts.la/matt55592 or enter "matt55592" as a referral code for a discount of your purchase. A new Tesla Model 3 RWD is below the threshold of the "luxury vehicle supplement" and therefore will only be £20 to tax for the first year!
