Electric Vehicle Dictionary – Basic Terminologies in EV World – Part 2

Electric vehicles are simpler than you think. Here are the basic terminologies that you need to know in the electric vehicle world.

Degradation – A natural process that permanently reduces the amount of energy a battery can store, or the amount of power it can deliver. How often batteries are charged and how hot or cold they get can also have an impact to degradation.

Battery Capacity – The amount of power an electric vehicle battery can hold. Measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

e-Pedal – This is a system by Nissan for its EV Nissan LEAF. It is not a separate pedal. It allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate and stop using only the accelerator pedal.

Zero Emission – Refers to an engine, motor, process, or other energy source, that emits no waste products that pollute the environment or disrupt the climate.

Gigafactory – A very large factory which produces electric cars and batteries. Usually refers to Tesla factory that is gigantic in scale.

Alternating Current (AC) – A type of electricity flow, used for charging electric vehicles at slower rate (Level 1). The flow that comes from the grid is always AC.

Charging Point/Charging Station – A place to charge your electric car with electricity.

Charging Rate – The speed at which a battery will accept electricity while being charged. This can also be the speed at which a charger will deliver power to your battery.

Max Charging Rate of EV – The maximum charge rate the battery can accept. If your vehicle’s max charge rate is 50kW, you won’t be able to charge any faster by using a 150kW charging point.

The usual Max charing rate of EVs is 50 kW. Newer models are capable of charging over 200 kW including the Porsche Taycan and some Teslas.

Max Charging Rate of Charge Point – The maximum charge rate the charge point can deliver. If your vehicle can charge at 50kW, it will only charge at 7kW on a 7kW charge point.

Charging flap/Charge flap – The cover of the electric vehicle’s charge port. It’s the standard AC and DC port.

CCS – Combined Charging System. European standard plug and socket type used for connecting electric cars to a DC rapid charger. Can provide power at up to 350 kilowatts. Almost all new pure-electric cars have a CCS socket.

CHAdeMO – is an abbreviation of “CHArge de MOve. in Japanese, meaning “Let’s have a cup of tea while charging.”

A large, round four pin charging plug, which is used for rapid charging points and usually works with EVs manufactured by Nissan and Mitsubishi. Has less power than CCS and requires two separate sockets.

Tesla Powerwall – Rechargeable lithium-ion battery used in homes to store electricity, usually gathered from renewable sources like solar. It also serves as backup power.

Bidirectional Charging – EV charging that goes two ways. Meaning charge and discharge. This is the technology that made the V2G possible.

V2G – Vehicle-to-Grid. Technology that enables energy to be pushed back to the grid from the EV battery. Not all EVs have this feature.

V2H – Vehicle-to-Home. The ability of EV in the event of power outage or when the grid is down, to continue to power your home from the battery.

V2L – Vehicle-to-Load. A technology that enables the electrical energy from the EV battery to be used by external devices. It’s like using the car as a powerbank.

Voltage – Refers to the amount of power that comes from outlet or charger. The higher the voltage, the faster your battery will charge. The time it takes to charge also depends on the type of charger and size of the battery.

AVAS – Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System. This is an artificial sound generator installed in electric vehicles. It helps pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users to hear them coming and improve safety.
