Why do we need electric vehicles? The ZERO EMISSION message has been lost in recent years. Many have switched to an EV for the significantly lower running costs. But in the UK, with the currently high electricity prices, the demand for EVs has plummeted. With also a combination of negative articles in the media, ceasing of Government grants, increase of VAT on public charging and the used market getting flooded with ex-financed vehicles, prices have dropped and buyers are holding off. Timed with the barrage of misinformation and FUD (all sourced from an industry that’s actively trying to delay the EV transition), I feel this nonsense has had a huge impact in 2022-2023 in the UK market. The running cost has now become the focus and the ZERO EMISSION message has been lost and is getting ignored. The whole point of the electric vehicle transition is to improve our air quality, not just for us humans, but also the other animals, birds, insects, fish and plants we share this planet with and also for the health of the planet itself. But no one, except Sadiq Khan*, is talking about air quality.
While electricity prices are ridiculously high in the UK, EVs are still vastly cheaper to run for most, especially if you can charge at home overnight on cheap rate electricity or solar. And for those that can’t, it now costs about the same to fuel as an ICE vehicle, but then they do still save on servicing, road tax and BIK tax. No one said EVs should be cheaper to run – that was just an added benefit. We need to be talking about EMISSIONS again!
