Well, as a piston moves up and down, it creates forces that cause the engine to shake. Shaking engines aren’t desirable, so we try to remove these forces. It’s easy to understand that as the piston comes to the top and stops, it sends an upward force, called a primary force. What’s more difficult to visualize are the secondary forces, which result from the piston moving faster at the top of the cylinder, versus the bottom of the cylinder, as some nerd on the internet points out with math.
