Inverter issue! Problems with our AlphaESS system from Heatable. Here’s how they were resolved

Our solar and battery install from Heatable was completed on 9th April (watch here: https://youtu.be/yJe8LfrG_8k ) and it’s been absolutely brilliant. But we’ve had a couple of annoying issues…

Firstly, one of the solar strings (a string being a series of solar panels connected together) wasn’t working. Secondly, we weren’t able to export very much to the grid when the battery reached 100%.

It all got fixed thankfully. Here’s what happened.

And yes, we’re now generating (and exporting) a lot so there’ll be lots of figures in an upcoming episode!

Our kit:
• 30x REA Fusion2 450w bifacial panels
• 2x Alpha ESS Smile G3 inverters joined in parallel, with a total of 20.2kWh battery storage.

3/2/25: G99 requested and approval received from UK Power Networks
4/2/25: Survey
4/4/25: Scaffolding
5/4/25: Richard delivered the kit
7/4/25: Installation start
9/4/25: Installation complete
10/4/25: MCS etc docs sent; Applied for Outgoing Octopus
11/4/25: Installer, Richard called after Heatable contacted him about solar inconsistencies. Electrician, Lee on his way over (he couldn’t make it in the end due to traffic)
12/4/25: Lee came to test strings; all okay
13/4/25: Scaffolding removed
15/4/25: Richard called to say it’s being discussed with Alpha
16/4/25: Chatted to Ben from Heatable and James from Alpha at Everything Electric in London
22/4/25: Heatable called to book in return visit; Alpha called to arrange delivery on 24/4/25
24/4/25: Lee swapped inverter
25/4/25: Heatable courtesy call in the morning to check everything was okay
29/4/25: Export MPAN received from UK Power Networks (Took 19 days; I chased UKPN. Not sure if that helped!)
2/5/25: Octopus asked for a meter reading
3/5/25: Outgoing Octopus live
14/5/25: Alpha ESS applied fix for parallel export issue
