It’s about time my wife got a classic car to enjoy again. The last classic she had was a 1961 VW Beetle so on the way back from our off-roading trip in Spain we picked up this beautiful 1961 VW Karmann Ghia. The intention is to make it into a useable daily driver that might be able to persuade her to switch away from he Tesla Model 3 and use this Karmann Ghia as her regular car.

The plan is to go with a Tesla Model 3 motor in the rear and a 60kWh battery pack, split between a rear battery pack mounted behind the back seats and one in the front where the petrol tank used to be located. We’d also like to turn the original engine bay into a sizeable rear luggage area.

There’s also a long list of general upgrades we need to do on the car to bring it into the 21st century and add some safety and comfort, including seat belts (yes – this car didnt’ have seatbelts from the factory), disc brakes, better ligths etc and the most important upgrade of all for my wife – ‘heated seats’.

Make sure you’re subscribed to follow the journey of turning this Karmann Ghia into a very cool useable electric car for the 21st century.
