In April 2025, electric vehicle owners will now have to pay vehicle excise duty (more commonly called "road tax" or "car tax"). I think that is the right thing, but I do have issues with the unfairness of the taxation system and the complexity. However, while EV owners will now be paying VED, they will obviously not be paying fuel duty so the overall tax intake to the Government is going to continue to decrease as we electrify our road transport.
A new system of taxation is needed to replace the lost fuel duty on petrol and diesel sales. In this video I look at how much taxation an average petrol car generates compared to an EV. It’s an eye opener. I also look at what the alternative could be in the form of a true pay per mile road tax to replace fuel duty, which is effectively a pay per mile tax anyway, but obviously only applies to ICE vehicles.
