We keep hearing about dynamic LED headlights but many may not realise exactly what they are and the benefits they bring. So here I do my best to demonstrate how they work and how much I think they are a fundamental safety feature.
They’ve not even been legal in some parts of the world such as the USA which I really don’t understand. Modern Teslas have them fitted including the Model 3, Y and new Model S (though not X yet for some reason) but they are not active. They’re just static fixed beam headlights (and not very good ones I’m sorry to say!) although no doubt one day a software update will enable full functionality.
So here we have a Porsche Taycan with a fairly traditional type beam pattern. Mostly fixed although these upgraded ones DO have cornering function. However the blue Taycan 4s has the Full LED matrix system which Porsche Call PDLS+ ( Porsche dynamic lighting system) with the plus meaning they also have interaction/ junction lighting.
They’re great! They shadow the car in front but allow a higher beam either side enabling much more visibility. They also work to prevent blinding any oncoming traffic – something Teslas are particularly poor at!
And that’s just where things are now. New HD versions are coming soon, not just from Porsche but also Audi, Mercedes and more.
Good headlights are vital for safe driving so the more cars that have these systems fitted, the better!
