Working with some power wheelchair motors, I needed to figure out how to allow the motor to freewheel WITHOUT having to apply power to the built-in parking brakes. So, I took the brakes apart.

In this case, all I really did was simply remove the "brake disk". That way, the motor could spin. Another approach would be to remove the large nut on the end of the motor driveshaft. The advantage of that is it would leave the brake un-modified, and it could be un-done later if desired. Unfortunately, that nut used a tiny set-screw, which I was NOT able to remove.
Physically, it was much easier to remove the brake friction material than the nut on the driveshaft.
This was part of my Remote Control Lawn Mower project.
