The GTI has gone electric… and this is it — the all-new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI. The first fully electric GTI in the badge’s 50-year history, and honestly, this feels like a huge moment for Volkswagen. In this video I’m taking a proper first look around the new electric hot hatch to see whether it really deserves those three legendary letters.
Because while rivals like the Cupra Raval VZ, Alpine A290 and Mini JCW Electric are all chasing massive performance figures, Volkswagen says this car is about something slightly different. Not just outright speed… but proper GTI feel.
And there’s a lot here that feels reassuringly GTI. The iconic red line across the nose, tartan seats, retro Mk1-inspired displays, front-wheel drive, adaptive suspension and even a dedicated GTI mode designed to turn everything up when you want some fun.
Performance comes from a 226hp electric motor paired with a 52kWh battery, giving the ID. Polo GTI a 0–62mph time of 6.8 seconds and up to 263 miles of WLTP range. It’ll also charge from 10–80% in around 24 minutes.
So yes, it’s electric. But Volkswagen clearly wants this to feel like a real GTI first and an EV second. And honestly? From what we’ve seen so far… VW might just have pulled it off.
