Breaking into the territory occupied firmly by the German Big Three of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz has always proved tricky. History tells us that any manufacturer looking to compete with these three in the large executive saloon market has their work cut out for them. The mainstream manufacturers all tried, and ultimately failed, and it has taken Lexus a long time of perseverance to even warrant a mention in the same breath. Even Jaguar has all but abandoned the sector. So what chance does the new luxury brand from the Hyundai stand? Perhaps it needs to approach things from a different angle. With the new G80 it certainly does that, as it offers full electrification in this class, where only Mercedes-Benz and Tesla offer similar. Will this stand it in good stead and make it stand out enough to be noticed? Or will it just be another footnote in the book of those who tried, but ultimately failed? The only way to find out is to subject it to the road test actual car buyers trust to deliver the definitive verdict – the AutoEV one.
