The Volkswagen Transporter has been an icon for 75 years, loved by tradespeople, camper van enthusiasts, and VW purists alike. But this 7th generation model has sparked controversy—because under the skin, it’s actually a Ford Transit Custom.

It’s all part of a big corporate deal which saw Ford get VW’s bits to use for the Explorer and Capri, while VW gets the Transit to rehash as the Transporter.

It’s been very controversial, with customers rushing to buy the last of the ‘real’ Transporters. This isn’t the real thing, they say….

But look at the positive side. Sharing the cost means we get a better van – whether it’s a Ford or a Volkswagen.

That’s especially true when you’re taking about this electric version. We have called the Transit Custom the new benchmark in this sector, so copying Ford’s homework seems like a good idea. To help convince customers, VW is making it slightly cheaper, plus throwing in 5 years of warranty, servicing, and roadside assistance, making it a tempting deal compared to the Ford. But does that make it the better buy?

So, is this new Transporter just a rebadged Ford, or has VW managed to improve on an already great van? In this video, Tom puts electric version to the test, to see if it lives up to the legendary name.
