I made a bronze plaque for my garage.
Please click SHOW MORE!
I’ve done a little bit of metal casting before, and thought I’d try a wall plaque.
The plaque is 6 inches wide, 4 inches tall and 0.25" thick in the recessed area (painted black) and 0.35" thick in the area of the raised lettering and border.
Here’s a Bronze Bowl I made a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MSsj4ACD24
The metal is mostly "Silicon Bronze" which is copper with a little bit of elemental silicon and other materials added in. It melts well into a very thin liquid, great for picking up details in casting. I made my own bronze by melting down scrap copper and adding the correct ratio of other metals to it.
My furnace is a common style that runs on a typical 20lb propane tank: https://amzn.to/3B0UIQo
I made my own lifting tongs and pouring shank.
I know that in the video, the furnace and crucible look a little shaky. Rest assured that they were far more solid than they looked in the video. It’s also important to wear a face shield, heavy leather gloves, and protective clothing.
I also recommend graphite ingot molds. The bronze pops right out of them. (Don’t ask me about the time I tried a muffin tin!) https://amzn.to/49d4tYj
