Kāpiti Coast cycling routes 1 – Main Road Waikanae, Kāpiti Expressway track, Waikanae River track

Journey: Starting outside New World Waikanae on Main Road (old State Highway 1), we head north towards Peka Peka. At Harrisons Garden World we join the gravelled Kāpiti Expressway cycle track, south towards Waikanae. At Ngarara Road we cross over the expressway and continue north towards Te Moana Road. Very useful bicycle repair and maintenance station at the junction of Te Moana Road and Kāpiti Expressway. We cross Te Moana Road and head towards Waikanae River. As we approach Waikanae River, we are forced to leave the track and ride on residential streets. Now on Puriri Road, we turn right onto Kauri Road. As we approach the end of Kauri Road we pass through a gate. This gate marks the old entrance to El Rancho. We follow the short section of tarmac road until we reach a fork. We take the left fork towards the river. Taking the right fork takes you over the river and towards Paraparaumu. After about 150m we reach another fork. We take the left fork towards Waikanae Town Centre. We follow the Waikanae River track for about 4.5km. As we approach Main Road bridge there is a short steep gravel section – it may be safer to walk your bicycle up this incline. Back on Main Road, we head towards Waikanae Town Centre and eventually we return to our starting point at New World Waikanae.

Distance: Approximately 12km

Duration: About 1 hour

Track: Mixture of tarmac and gravel

Difficulty: Easy. Mainly flat with the odd small rise

Refreshments: Harrisons Garden World

Observations: Lookout for wild rabbits on the Kāpiti Expressway track and loose (unleashed) dogs on the Waikanae River track. Also, the council recently repaired the river track surface, which was eroded due to flooding, for this reason there are pockets of loose gravel which have not been not compacted down.
