In our Tech Video series on the construction of our series validation vehicles, which are now already in their final stages, Max asked our expert Oliver Stocke. Oliver leads a 7-member development team and explains in our new video how an electric motor is built and installed in the Sion. He also gives an insight into the energy management system. Where do the strands come together to control the complex system between motor, vehicle battery, solar panels and bidirectional charging port.

THE SION
The Sion is the first series-produced car that can additionally charge its battery using solar power. A car that charges itself – a Solar Electric Vehicle (SEV).
The Sion is equipped with a 54 kWh battery, which corresponds to a total range of up to 305 km. Additional range is also provided by the solar panels, seamlessly integrated into the body of the car. These are able to harness the power of the sun and generate up to 245 km (average 112 km) per week of additional range at peak. Solar charging will be available whilst driving, to enable the most efficient use of daylight hours.
